2021 Mazda CX-9 vs 2021 Honda Pilot

The competition is strong in the mid-size SUV segment and the models found in this category all have their qualities. However, some have more than others and manage to seduce people who discover them, because they have everything going for them.
This is the case of the Mazda CX-9, which is really full of qualities. In truth, since it was last redesigned in 2017, Mazda has not stopped improving it. The same can't be said for the Honda Pilot, which hasn't changed a bit since its last redesign in 2016.
From Mazda's side, here's what makes the CX-9 a really worth considering.
Styling
If you want to get your hands on an SUV that stands out in terms of style, the choice is easy here. While the Honda Pilot isn't ugly, nothing about its design is stunning. Honda is playing the traditional card. It gets the job done, but it doesn't evoke emotion.

Luxury
A few years ago, Mazda decided to offer a Signature version with some of its models. This one takes luxury to another level, so much so that you won't find the same kind of attention elsewhere. Yes, the Pilot comes in a well-equipped Touring version, but there's something about the Signature version that takes us elsewhere. The color scheme inside, in particular, is extraordinary.
Fuel economy
Honda has always been known for offering vehicles with excellent fuel economy ratings, and this is no exception with the Honda Pilot. Its 3.5-litre V6 is one of the most efficient in this regard. However, it's overshadowed by the CX-9's 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. The CX-9 gets 11.6 L/100 km in the city and 9.1 L/100 km on the highway, all for a combined 10.5 L/100 km. The Pilot can only do better than 12.4 and 9.3 liters, in order, for city/highway driving. Combined, that's 11.0 liters with the Pilot.
Behind the wheel
Finally, where the battle isn't even close is with driving pleasure. If the Pilot offers a comfortable and reassuring ride, the CX-9 adds driving pleasure and sportiness. It is by far the sportiest and most fun-to-drive mid-size SUV in the industry.
The verdict is clear; if you want a competent mid-size SUV in every respect, Mazda is where you'll find it.
